In the name of

Recently — in the name of censoring pornography — China blocked access to Google and demanded that computers sold in China come supplied with an Internet nanny filter called Green Dam Youth Escort, starting July 1. Green Dam can also be used to block politics, not just Playboy. Once you start censoring the Web, you restrict the ability to imagine and innovate. You are telling young Chinese that if they really want to explore, they need to go abroad.

China is also courting trouble.

Press the advantages

I still believe that America, with its unrivaled freedoms, venture capital industry, research universities and openness to new immigrants has the best assets to be taking advantage of this moment — to out-innovate our competition. But we should be pressing these advantages to the max right now.

What A is to B, C is to D

Sometimes, I worry, though, that what oil money is to Russia, our ability to print money is to America. Look at the billions we just printed to bail out two dinosaurs: General Motors and Chrysler.

Embolism

In medicine, an embolism (plural embolisms) (Greek εμβολισμός) occurs when an object (the embolus, plural emboli) (Greek έμβολον, prep. εν+verb βάλλω) migrates from one part of the body (through circulation) and causes a blockage (occlusion) of a blood vessel in another part of the body. The term was coined in 1848 by Rudolph Carl Virchow.[1] This is in contrast with a thrombus, or clot, which forms at the blockage point within a blood vessel and is not carried from somewhere else.

However

However the crisis unfolds, the Islamic Republic as it has existed for 30 years is over. What follows will -- in either the short or long term -- represent a genuine improvement for both the Iranian people and the international community.

Crackdown

As the protest movement gained momentum, it quickly transcended Mousavi himself -- in part because the regime's crackdown on communication and its arrest of hundreds of activists has kept Mousavi from exerting any operational guidance over street politics.

Hard-liner

강경 노선사람, 강경파, 신조가 굳은 사람

It is important not to overstate this analogy; there are differences between recent events in Iran and those of 1979. The hard-liners, thanks to their close association with Iran's Revolutionary Guard, have a greater capacity for repression than did the Shah and those close to him.

Incumbent

a. 현직[재직]의

The unprecedented scope of the unrest is a response to the profound miscalculation of the incumbent president, Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, and Iran's Supreme Leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei -- who apparently decided to use an election as a means of orchestrating a power grab.

Transcend

The current turmoil has engaged Iranians on a scale that transcends age, ethnic background, income level, or geographic location.

The regime, however, has always managed to contain such political flare-ups. For most Iranians, life went on as usual, albeit somewhat uneasily.
